Santa Clara, Calif. -- January 20, 1998 -- Database Excelleration Systems, Inc. (DES), the leading provider of intelligent Solid-State Disk (SSD) systems for client/server database applications, announced today major price reductions on three models of its Database Excellerator™ product family packaged specifically for the Sybase, Inc. marketplace.

"Recent decreases in DRAM memory pricing have allowed DES to pass on dramatic savings directly to our Sybase customers and system integrators," said DES President and CEO Gene Bowles. "We have reduced the pricing on our most popular solid state disk configurations for the Sybase marketplace by over 50%, providing a new cost-effective performance solution for today’s mainstream client/server database applications."

New Pricing Effective Immediately

The aggressive new pricing for DES’ Model 800D Database Excellerators is as follows: the 804 Megabyte system is now priced at $19,900; the 1.072 Gigabyte system now sells for $23,700; and the 1.340 Gigabyte system now sells for $27,500. The new pricing is effective immediately.  

"The addition of plug-and-play Solid-State Disks often are a valuable addition to enterprise-level database applications with I/O contention issues," said Robert Gray, research manager covering storage subsytems for International Data Corporation.

"Significant performance improvements and system stabilization may be realized by adding a solid state system like DES' which greatly improves access and response time to specific, highly used files or database tables. The aggressive new pricing announced by DES today should make Sybase customers take a good look at incorporating SSD into their client/server environment," Gray said.

Sybase Initiative

In addition to the price reductions that were announced today, DES also unveiled a sales and marketing initiative targeted at Sybase UNIX and Windows NT installations, where the company has enjoyed considerable sales success. The Sybase software architecture dovetails particularly well with SSD storage, offering the opportunity to achieve substantial performance gains with minimum changes in the storage system configuration.

"Just by moving the log and tempdb files onto Database Excelleration SSD systems, our Sybase customers routinely experience overall application performance improvements from 50%-200%," explained Bowles. "Our new pricing is designed to open up a broad range of database applications which, prior to now, could not afford the significant advantages of SSD storage."

"In conjunction with these pricing actions," Bowles continued, "DES will be working actively with Sybase VARs and system integrators to bring these new cost-effective performance enhancements to their end-user customers."
